At a networking event in 2010, Chelsea Cabanillas met the evening’s speaker, Ginnie Rowe, from The Singletons Board of Directors. The Singletons mission, to offer practical support to single parent families diagnosed with cancer, immediately spoke to Chelsea’s heart. In her words, “I was hooked. I had to get involved.” Read more
As the founder of The Singletons, I have always referred to the organization as my fourth child. The Singletons, just like any child, has brought me a countless amount of proud “mama” moments, a few tears and an endless amount of hope for the future.
I believe, “It takes a village to raise a child”. The Singletons is a unique organization built on the simple concept of supporting each other through life’s struggles. We are an innovative organization whom focus on day-to-day needs that people take for granted, as well as the emotional and financial stress of facing cancer. The Singleton’s vision of being the village that raises a family out of desperation and despair has endured.
The Singleton mission is driven by these straightforward yet impactful goals;
- Promote time spent as a family
- Provide practical household support
- Relieve the family budget
- Reduce the level of stress within the home
OUR FAMILIES NEED YOU
As Singleton Mom, Tiffany, puts it, “I felt so much stronger for having The Singletons. I feel like a transformed person taking that stress away. Feeling that gratitude, support and love, turned my emotional world around. ”
Raising a family has its challenges regardless. Raising a family as a single parent amplifies the stress. Add a terrifying cancer diagnosis into the mix, along with exhausting treatments, all the while trying to raise a family as a single parent is nearly impossible. The strength our Singleton Families radiate is truly inspiring. They are the heartbeat of the organization.
- 60% of the families that The Singletons serve have a parent with stage 4, incurable cancer
- 66% of Singleton Parents with cancer or with a child with cancer are not able to work
- 73% do not receive child support
Other organizations may address one of these issues, but none provide the programs to address all of these intertwined areas of life, nor do they focus on the single parent population.
YOUR SUPPORT IS CRUCIAL
Over the course of a year, a Singleton Family will have the opportunity to receive $5,000 in assistance through programs such as; utility bills, family style dinners, restocking of household necessities, Holiday gifts and fun family activities. This is UNPARALLELED support! Although it is no easy task, we rely completely on the generosity of individuals, groups and corporations in our community.
MAGNIFY THE LOVE
In 2018, adjustments and cuts to our one-of-a-kind program operations had to be made. However, the need continues to grow. I have always tried to find the bright side of a situation but this has to be said, “We have had a difficult go of it lately!” Since the organization’s inception in 2006, the last 18 months have proven to be our most challenging. Donations have been historically low.
YOU CAN HELP
Your charitable gift to The Singletons will help single parent families battling cancer in Arizona today and it qualifies for the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit (QCO Code: 21020). ADDITIONALLY, by making your Arizona Charitable Tax Credit through the Executive Council Charities and their Support Arizona Youth (SAY) Campaign; www.ec70phx.com/Ong-Singletons. They will match 25% of your donation to The Singletons. Now your gift is MAGNIFIED!
I am endlessly grateful for your generosity! The Singletons would be unable to give the love, support and caring nature our programs provide if not for you. Together, we are…. Meeting the Needs of Today…. Providing Hope for Tomorrow!
Executive Director/ Founder
The Singletons Kitchen is one of the core pillars of The Singletons program. Its purpose is to provide delicious family-style meals, made with fresh ingredients and offer a simple answer to the ever-present question, “What’s for dinner? And portions are generous enough to leave a few leftovers, too!
Singleton parents wishing to receive meals simply sign up each month on our parent portal and select which type of protein they prefer ~ chicken, beef, pork, or seafood. A variety of meals are ordered by The Singletons at Dream Dinners, and assembled once a month by wonderful volunteer groups (who register to participate by contacting The Singletons office). When meal-prep is finished, we freeze the meals until the third Saturday of each month. Families receive their entrees, some sides and /or breakfast pockets at the same time they receive their Bare Necessities bundles.
What happens when a group arrives at Dream Dinners? Our Singletons Kitchen Hostess(es) along with Dream Dinners staff will be there to greet them. They’ll hear The Singletons story and then get quick instructions about how to put the meals together. Volunteers split up around the room, 2-3 at each station. They each follow well marked recipes, and create delicious meals with provided utensils, kitchen tools and packaging. They measure the already chopped, sliced and grated ingredients – the same foods you’d have in your own kitchen. Every meal includes easy-to-cook instructions and is stored in the refrigerator until they are taken to The Singletons freezers.
We like to say that these are kid-friendly meals, not only for the taste, but also because even a child as young as 11 or so can put dinner together, with just a little supervision from Mom or Dad.
Check out our calendar for available dates and more information on how to book this volunteer event.

Darlene has been a dedicated volunteer with The Singletons, since its inception, as Singleton Moms. While working full time and raising a family of four children, she knew time was very precious, but still wanted to find some way to to help with a local cause. More than that, Darlene wanted to help make a difference, no matter how big or how small.
A new year calls for a new and improved us!
