Each month Beth McDonald from 99.9 KEZ chooses one extraordinary woman who has made a difference in the community. July’s deserving recipient is none other than our own Jody Farley-Berens!

Michelle Hilliker, a past Board Member nominated Jody, the Singleton Moms’ Executive Director. This is what she wrote:

Jody Farley-Berens
The phrase “single mom with cancer” never entered Jody Farley-Beren’s mind until she saw it for herself. When her long-time friend, Michelle Singleton, was diagnosed with cancer, she was devastated as she herself was only 27 years old and a mother. Although she was not a single mom, she couldn’t imagine facing mortality at such a young age and continuing to be a positive force in children’s lives. Michelle was a single mom of 4 children aged 1, 5, 6, and 14 at the time of her diagnosis. Michelle passed away on October 23rd, 2005 at the young age of 32.

Jody co-founded Singleton Moms and began as a group of Michelle’s family and friends who wished to honor a brave woman and carry on in her giving footsteps. By allowing single mothers with cancer the time to focus more on their family and recovery, rather than their normal daily responsibilities, they feel we are fulfilling a legacy Michelle would be very proud to leave behind.

From the moment Jody co-founded Singleton Moms, she has gone above 100 percent into helping single mothers with cancer. Not only is she in the office during the week, she’s also attending numerous events at night and on the weekends. I have never seen anyone so committed to making a difference in her organization and in the lives of those she touches. As Executive Director, Jody oversees the day-to-day operations of Singleton Moms and also serves as Fundraising Committee Chair. She is responsible for the original structure of the Singleton Moms’ programs “Michelle’s Pockets” and “Michelle’s Kitchen,” and she is working to expand the “Singleton Kids” program. Passionate about her work, she spends countless hours seeking financial support for these programs through fundraising, sponsorships, and general donations.
